Culture at Villa Sawallisch
Sawallisch was a dedicated patron of young musicians and founded the Sawallisch Foundation, which continues to support and promote young talent to this day. He spent most of his life in Chiemgau with his wife Mechthild, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of the region. Even after his employment in the U.S., Grassau remained his refuge and he returned here again and again to recover from his commitments. His estate became a meeting place and inspiration for many artists, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Kent Nagano and Loriot.
Professor Sawallisch was also well known within the local population. The master tailor Otto Hofer Senior of the Trachten Hofer company was his house tailor. Sawallisch wore his tailor-made suits, vests and tailcoats at a large number of his concerts. At particularly important concerts, he always wore a new tailcoat. Even when conducting from the concert pit, he liked to choose a freshly lined tailcoat.
On February 22, 2013, Wolfgang Sawallisch, an honorary citizen of Grassau, passed away in Grassau and also found his final resting place in the cemetery there. In his honor, Wolfgang Sawallisch Square in front of the Grassau Music School was named after him and will be remembered for a long time to come.
